Residency Program in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Biostatistics Courses

The Department of Biostatistics at Columbia’s Mailman School of Public Health offers several biostatistics courses that may be useful for residents interested in research. The following is a list of recommended courses, please see the school website for course descriptions and additional course listings.

P6103 Introduction to Biostatistics, core course, 3 credits
P6104 Introduction to Biostatistical Methods, advanced core course, placement exam required, 4 credits
P8120 Categorical Data Analysis, with Dr. Melissa Begg, 3 credits
P8100 Applied Regression Analysis, with Dr. Roger Vaughan, 3 credits
P6110 Statistical Computing with SAS, 3 credits
P8140 The Randomized Clinical Trial, 3 credits


Note: P6103 or P6104 are prerequisite requirement for the other classes listed. A waiver exam for both courses is available for those with a background in statistics.

The following are three textbooks that might serve as introductory readings and reference:

'Basic & Clinical Biostatistics' by Beth Dawson and Robert G. Trapp, McGraw Hill, ISBN 0-07-141017-1

'Practical Statistics for Medical Research' by Douglas G. Altman, Chapman & Hall, ISBN 0-412-27630-5

'Applied Regression Analysis and Multivariable Methods' by David G. Kleinbaum et al., Duxbury Press, ISBN 0-495-38496-8
