Resident responsibilities while on rotation:
  1. Review daily Hemoglobins, look up patient information on all abnormal results, and meet with the lab director daily to discuss them.
  2. Familiarize yourself with the tests run in the lab, read the SOPs and package inserts, and watch how the tests are run.
  3. Requests are frequently made for unreasonable tests – get involved with the clinicians when a test does not make sense.
  4. Obtain answers to syllabus questions and go over them with the lab director.
  5. Prepare an in-service presentation for the technicians/supervisors (they can help you pick a topic of interest, but make sure to discuss topic with the lab director).
  6. Discuss with lab director how to make the website better for future residents.

What should I do on the first day of the rotation?

Meet with the lab director to schedule meeting times and discuss how you will accomplish the goals of the rotation. Meet the supervisors and technologists in the Special Hematology Lab to find out what each of them is responsible for, what tests they are setting up, and any problem requests that you can get involved in.
