Residency Program in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Program Overview

The Department of Pathology at the Columbia-Presbyterian Campus of New York Presbyterian Hospital and the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Columbia University offers an extraordinary opportunity for ACGME-accredited graduate training in Pathology in a vibrant medical and cultural setting.

The large volume of clinical material from all subspecialties of medicine and surgery and the full-time faculty: resident ratio of more than 3:1 provide unexcelled training in diagnostic pathology and laboratory medicine. Subspecialty expertise in the department and in the clinical services of the medical center assures state-of-the-art training and clinical research opportunities. All residents participate in medical student teaching in the College of Physicians & Surgeons.

In 2004 the department ranked #4 among recipients of NIH-sponsored research support among Departments of Pathology in the country and first in NY-New England; this provides outstanding research opportunities and excellent financial support for residents interested in experimental pathology.

The department is proud of its long history of training men and women for leadership roles in diagnostic, academic and research pathology and for careers in the clinical practice of pathology.

Charles C. Marboe, M.D., Program Director
Steven Spitalnik, M.D., Director, Residency Training in Clinical Pathology
Michael L. Shelanski, M.D., Ph.D., Chairman, Department of Pathology
