About Us
History
Presbyterian Hospital was founded as a general hospital in 1868 and in 1911 affiliated itself with Columbia University's College of Physicians & Surgeons for coordinating the care of the sick with the educational and research program of the university. The hospital now has approximately 1,050 patient care beds, including 750 at the Milstein Hospital Building (opened in 1989) and 300 at the Allen Pavilion (opened in 1988).
The Medical Center also includes:
- New York State Psychiatric Institute & Hospital,
- Edward S. Harkness Eye Institute
- Neurological Institute
- Children's Hospital of New York
- Sloane Hospital for Women
- and the New York Orthopaedic Hospital.
The medical and surgical services are extremely active and provide primary care as well as receiving a large volume of referrals of unusual and difficult cases. This provides the Department of Pathology with an extraordinary variety of material for teaching and training purposes. The many departmental conferences as well as pathology conferences with clinical services assure that each resident has ample opportunity to review interesting cases.
The College of Physicians & Surgeons of Columbia University is a well known center of excellence in teaching and research in clinical medicine and basic science.
Many of the advances in medical care which have come from the medical center have been the result of the free collaboration between departments. The College provides a lively, stimulating environment and draws visiting scientists from around the world to work and to lecture. The department encourages residents to take advantage of these educational opportunities as well as affiliations for clinical and basic studies.
