Programs Offered

  • Pathobiology
The program in pathobiology is particularly appropriate for graduates of M.D.-Ph.D. programs, but is open to all applicants with proven research interests. The resident completes either the 24-month anatomic pathology or the 24-month laboratory medicine core program. The department then supports the resident for 3 years of full-time research in one of the many research laboratories of the department or in collaboration with a research lab in another department of the medical center.

  • Anatomic Pathology
The program in anatomic pathology includes 24 months of surgical, autopsy, pediatric, gynecologic, renal, and molecular pathology, along with cytogenetics, neuropathology, cytopathology, hematopathology and immunopathology. This is followed with 12 months of advanced training in surgical pathology with increased diagnostic or supervisory responsibilities. This program is designed for the resident who wishes to practice in a large community hospital or group practice or in an academic setting with research, teaching and diagnostic responsibilities.

  • Laboratory Medicine (Clinical pathology)
The laboratory medicine (clinical pathology) program has an 18 month core program with rotations through the divisions of hematology and coagulation, transfusion medicine, clinical chemistry, microbiology, diagnostic immunology, immunogenetics and histocompatibility, cytogenetics/molecular diagnostics, and medical informatics. The following 18 months of the program are devoted to advanced training in one of the subspecialty areas and includes a clinical research project. This program is well suited to graduates of combined M.D.-Ph.D. programs who are interested in practice or research in an academic or industrial setting.

  • Anatomic and Clinical Pathology
The combined anatomic and clinical pathology training program integrates 23 months of anatomic pathology including molecular diagnostics and cytogenetics, 18 months of laboratory medicine, and 7 months of a subspecialty of the resident's choice. This program prepares residents for practice in a private setting or for further subspecialty training. The training in anatomic pathology utilizes the large volume of material, graduated resident responsibility, and the superb diagnostic and teaching skills of the subspecialized faculty.
Training in laboratory medicine is very "hands-on" with residents taking responsibility for the utilization of blood products at the medical center, being active in the interpretation of laboratory test results, and working with the department's Clinical Laboratory Consultation Service (see Resources, below).

Both anatomic and clinical pathology programs have many didactic teaching conferences as well as numerous clinical case conferences, interdepartmental conferences, and research conferences.

Fellowship training is available in surgical pathology, neuropathology, hematopathology, and molecular pathology. An oral pathology residency program with the School of Dental and Oral Surgery began in 2003.
