Perinatal Pathology

Dr. Rosanna Abellar is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pathology and is fellowship trained in Perinatal and Pediatric Pathology at the Women’s and Infants Hospital, Brown Medical School.  She offers her expertise to the perinatal pathology service for diagnosing abnormalities concerning the developing fetus and placenta.  We perform a thorough gross and microscopic examination with emphasis on recognizing congenital anomalies, infection, and other maternal/fetal conditions that may lead to adverse perinatal outcome such as preterm delivery, intrauterine growth restriction, or pregnancy loss.  Additionally, we facilitate performance of special studies including microbiology cultures, genetic testing, and metabolic evaluation.  It is our goal to provide accurate diagnostic information that could impact the therapeutic care of the mother, the infant, and future pregnancies.
