Medical Microbiology Fellowship
The Medical Microbiology Fellowship at Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) is 1-year ACGME-accredited program designed to train a diverse group of Pathologists and Infectious Diseases specialists to become the next generation of leaders in the field. Fellows receive comprehensive training in all aspects of Medical Microbiology through daily rounds, bench rotations, clinical consultations, didactics, and real-world experience in laboratory directorship. They also engage in research and educational activities in preparation for a career in academic medicine. As one of the nations' premier medical centers, fellows provide care for patients from across the New York Metropolitan region and around the world, thereby affording the opportunity to gain clinical experience with both common and rare infectious diseases that affect diverse patient populations, including immigrants, travelers, transplant recipients, pediatrics, oncology and surgical patients. The Clinical Microbiology Laboratory at CUIMC performs full-service diagnostic testing in bacteriology, virology, mycobacteriology, mycology, parasitology, and molecular epidemiology, utilizing both traditional culture-based methods as well as cutting-edge molecular diagnostics.
On a daily basis, fellows will help work up challenging cases, contact and advise clinical teams, and supervise testing services. Fellows will be the primary contact for Microbiology consultations, interacting with providers from a wide spectrum of clinical services. Through supervised training, clinical consultation, and professional development, fellows will be prepared for a career of independent practice in the directorship of Clinical Microbiology laboratories. The program may also be tailored to the individual interests of fellows, positioning them for careers in public health microbiology, medical epidemiology, and administrative leadership. All fellows will engage in basic, translational, or applied research under faculty mentorship, as well as experience as instructors for medical students, residents, and other trainees, ultimately preparing them to become lifelong learners and investigators shaping the field for generations to come. Through these myriad clinical, research, and educational experiences, fellows will gain expertise in the science and practice of Medical Microbiology, preparing them for board certification through the American Board of Pathology or the American Board of Medical Microbiology.
