General Surgical Pathology
The General Surgical Pathology Unit of the Department of Pathology and Cell Biology provides diagnostic services for all tissue specimens (biopsies and resections) from NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center (NYPH/CUMC). We also routinely provide second-opinion diagnostic reviews of specimens from outside laboratories and hospitals. Our laboratory is accredited by several agencies, including the College of American Pathologists and the New York State Department of Health.
Our faculty comprises more than 20 board-certified pathologists representing all areas of subspecialty focus, including nationally recognized experts with diagnostic expertise in, as well as research experience with, a broad range of neoplastic and nonneoplastic conditions. Our contributions to and knowledge of recent scientific advances enable us to deliver comprehensive diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive information to our physician colleagues and their patients.
Our surgical pathologists work closely with faculty from the department's other laboratories, including cytopathology, personalized genomic medicine, cytogenetics, and flow cytometry. We also participate in multidisciplinary care with colleagues from the Departments of Medicine, Surgery, Otolaryngology, Urology, Orthopedic Surgery, Ophthalmology, and more. Additionally, the NYPH/CUMC campus facilitates access to the NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, an NCI-funded cancer center, the New York Genome Center, and various other centers and institutes. These intra- and interdepartmental collaborations enable us to provide the highest-quality diagnostic services and clinical care.
Along with our clinical services, we have a strong commitment to training residents and fellows. The unit trains two surgical-pathology fellows each year in addition to more than 20 trainees in the Division of Anatomic Pathology and combined Anatomic/Clinical Pathology residency programs. We also contribute to the training of fellows in gastrointestinal pathology, hematopathology, neuropathology, and molecular genetic pathology.
